It is now our third year bringing students to Greece and Deree, and it feels like home. We are in the same apartment that we've inhabited all three summers, complete with extra chairs that we scavenged. We were talking to the students on our first day about the city as palimpsest, a text erased and overwritten with a second text. Jeremiah realized that we add our own layers to it as he spotted the cafe in which we'd waited for Dad last year and then further down the one we'd had juice in that day that Ellie fell asleep. We went to our favorite Monastiraki restaurant a little later. But we like novelty, so we took the students to a mezedopoleio we'd spotted last year but hadn't tried out yet (wonderful), and we are currently on Samos, an island neither of us had been to before.
Things old and new:
Things old and new:
The flea market is old, but it was a Tuesday... since when is it open on a Tuesday?
Familiar corner in Monastiraka, but who gets a shave on the streetcorner with a straight razor?
Scrabble on the boat... in Greek.
The ferry... very old and grungy. Are ferries going out of fashion in favor of airplanes?
