Catching up... the slow boat home

We always take a boat at least one way on our island trip.  I love the ferry experience...watching the land recede, the open water, the colors of the wake, the stops at various islands so you see the interconnections and what you pass by, the size of the Aegean measured by hours of conversation or sleep, and finally the first glimpse of place being the harbor from the waterside.  Mostly our ferry rides have been overnight, so there is a few hours of this and then (for the adults at least) sleep in the cabins, but this was an afternoon/evening boat, so we spent the whole 7 hours awake.

The ferry ride is time-out-of-time, when there is so much uncommitted time that things happen that wouldn't otherwise.  At home or even in a city there would always be something else to do.  I think magic happens on the ferry in the empty space.

As always, in an endlessly rotating group, the students and our kids played endless rounds of various card games. The adults cobbled together an ouzo hour of various snacks we brought and bought and enjoyed a rambling conversation that we never would have had time for anyplace else.  We took a lot of pictures and slowed down our hectic pace of sightseeing for the afternoon.  Lovely.
Leaving Santorini
The picture doesn't capture the range of colors... it is like an  underwater sunset in blue.

This was the magic... Vasili began to play Mark's guitar and Betty to sing.  We were all entranced.  So beautiful.
