We've taught in an assortment of classrooms and on trips over the years, but I think this may be the first time we've had class in our own living room! See, Leslie was going to hold class in the downstairs lounge of the students' dorm (being Honors students, they prefer being able to come to class barefoot). Then she got the brainstorm of teaching them how to make tyropitas (cheese pies) while teaching them some survival Greek, and discussing the historical context of Greek attitudes to their monuments (and the current Greek economic crisis). So she brought them over to the Taverna Kaplani. One group got busy spooning a feta cheese mixture into strips of phyllo dough, while another group practiced reading and saying key Greek phrases; then they switched. Finally, we all got to sample the tyropitas, and discussed what we'd seen of Greek attitutes towards the past. In the picture above, Leslie is making a point about the early travellers and their views of Greece, using an early print of Ancient Corinth that was fortuitously hanging on our wall. And by the way, the tyropitas were delicious, and disappeared fast! Here's the last one:
