Last morning

Yesterday, I took an early morning walk to the church of Agia Paraskevi.  It was the day of the annual paniyiri, or saint's day festival, and in addition to church services, there is a big street fair.  They set up the night before and then slept on the streets to guard their goods and their spot.

It was our last full day in Athens and we spent it walking around in Gazi, Rouf, and Psirri.  We went to two Benaki Museums (contemporary art and Islamic art) and had lunch.

 The Islamic Museum was beautiful, and had ancient fortification walls in its basement.  Made me think about basements that don't have concrete foundations sit right on the ground so they can be excavated out underneath.

The adventure ended with the discovery of a lovely little mezedopoleio in Psirri.  It was an empty lot between buildings that is now a little grotto.  Enastron on Mikonos and Karaiskaki.
