One of Ellie's nicknames morphed from "Boo" to "Bouboulina" over the summers we spent in Greece. This is the inspiration.
Legend has it that she was born in a prison on a visit from her mother to her father who was imprisoned by the Turks for participating in an early unsuccessful revolt against the Turks. She grew up to become the only woman in the Filiki Etairia, the secret society of Greeks dedicated to revolution and independence from the Turks. She married twice, amassed a fortune, which she successfully protected and controlled herself, and then spent on naval vessels -- she owned a fleet of 8 ships all of which were used during the Greek War of Independence.
Ellie is named for Elinor of Aquitane, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Elanor, Sam Gangee's daughter and nicknamed for this fierce patriot. She has a lot to live up to.
