My partner and I have developed a bunch of experiential assignments designed to help students practice their language skills and also learn about the culture in a cross-cultural exchange. The first of these is the visit to the produce market. The students learn numbers, fruits and vegetables, and the polite small-talk that goes on. Then, in small groups led by students from Deree who are in the Honors Program, they try this out at the market. They are encouraged to ask questions of the students about the culture and to trade stories about cultural difference. This year's experience was great. The Deree students were so helpful and kind, and one even took the group out for coffee after.
